Antrax în Bulgaria
 

Autoritățile din Bulgaria au intrat în alertă după ce un cioban din satul Stefan Karadjovo a fost internat la spitalul din Iambol, în sudul țării, relatează presa bulgară.

Bărbatul a fost diagnosticat cu o formă cutanată de antrax, iar un alt cioban şi nepotul lui, dintr-un sat din nordul ţării, sunt suspectaţi că dezvoltă simptome de antrax cutanat.

Georgi Drosev, în vârstă de 47 de ani, s-a infectat după ce a tăiat o oaie bolnavă. El spune că nimeni n-a mâncat carnea şi a aruncat carcasa într-o râpă de la marginea satului. Doctorii spun că starea pacientului este bună şi va fi externat săptămâna viitoare.

Serviciile veterinare au dezinfectat curtea lui Drosev, precum şi râpa unde a aruncat carcasa animalului bolnav. Întreaga zonă este în carantină şi s-a început vaccinarea animalelor domestice.

Între timp, relatează presa bulgară, au apărut suspiciuni de antrax şi în satul Brestovene, din apropierea oraşului Razgrad, din nordul ţării, unde cinci oi din aceeaşi turmă au murit în cursul acestei săptămâni.

Serviciile veterinare au ordonat vaccinarea tuturor celor 1.200 de oi şi 400 de vite din sat, iar staulul oilor a fost dezinfectat cu penicilină. Au fost trimise probe la Sofia pentru teste de antrax.

A.[« ANTHRAX is a life-threatening infectious disease that normally affects animals , especially ruminants (such as goats, cattle, sheep and horses).ANTHRAX can be transmitted to humans by contact with infected animals or their products. In recent years, ANTHRAX has received a great deal of attention as it has become clear that the infection can also be spread by a bioterrorist attack or by biological warfare. ANTHRAX does not spread from person to person. The agent of ANTHRAX is a bacterium called BACILLUS ANTHRACIS. While other investigators discovered ANTHRAX BACILLUS, it was a German physician and scientist , Dr. Robert Koch, who proved that the ANTHRAX Bacterium was the cause of a disease that affected farm animals in his community. Under the microscope, the bacteria look like large rods.However, in the soil, where they live, ANTHRAX organisms , exist in a dormant form called spores. These spores are very hardy and difficult to destroy. The spores have been known to survive in the soil for as long as 48 years. ANTHRAX can infect humans in the three ways. The most common is infection through the skin, which cause an ugly sore that usually goes away without treatment. Humans and animals can ingest ANTHRAX from carcasses of dead animals that have been contaminated with ANTHRAX. Ingestion of ANTHRAX can cause serious , sometimes fatal disease. The most deadly form is inhalation ANTHRAX. If the spores of ANTHRAX are inhled, they migrate to lymph glands in the chest where they proliferate , spread and produce toxins that often cause death. The incubation period (the period between contact with ANTHRAX and the start of symptoms ) may be relatively short, from one to five days. Like other infectious diseases, the incubation period for ANTHRAX is quite variable and it may be weeks before an infected . There are three forms of disease caused by ANTHRAX : A. CUTANEOUS (SKIN) ANTHRAX ; B. INHALATION ANTHRAX ; C. GASTROINTESTINAL (BOWEL) ANTHRAX. «]Medical Author : Michael C. Biological diseases and the agents that might be used for terrorism have been listed by U.S.Centeres for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC). The list includes a sizable number of « select agents » -potential weapons whose tranfer in the scientific and medical communities is regulated to keep them out of unfriendly hands. These « select agents » are very varied.They comprise viruses, bacteria, rickettsiae (micro-organisms that have traits common to both bacteria and viruses), fungi and biological toxins. The CDC has classified all of these « select agents » according to the degree of danger each agent is felt to pose into one of three categories : CATEGORY A BIOLOGICAL DISEASE : The U.S. public health system and primary health –care provides must be prepared to address varied biological agents, including pathogens that are rarely agents , including pathogens that are rarely seen in the United States. High –priority agents include organisms that pose a risk to national security because they : a) can be easily disseminated or transmitted person-to –person ; b) cause high mortality, with potential for major public health impact ; c) might cause public panic and social disruption ; and d) require special action for public health preparedness .These agents include : BACILLUS ANTHRACIS (ANTHRAX) ; CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINIUM TOXIN (BOTULISM) ; YERSINIA PESTIS (THE PLAGUE) ; VARIOLA MAJOR (SMALLPOX) ; TULAREMIA (FRANCISELLA TULARENSIS) ; HEMORAGIC FEVER due to : EBOLA virus ; MARBURG virus. CATEGORY B BIOLOGICAL DISEASE : -Second highest priority agent include those that : a) are moderately easy to disseminate ; b) cause moderate morbidity and low mortality and c) require specific enhancements of CDC’s diagnostic capacity and enhanced disease surveillance. These agents/ diseases include : Q FEVER (COXIELLA BURNETII) ; BRUCELLOSIS (undulant fever) ; GLANDERS (BURKHOLDERIA MALLEI) ; RICIN TOXIN (from the castor bean RICINUS COMMUNIS) ; EPSILON TOXIN of CLOSTRIDIUM PERFRINGENS (the GAS GANGRENE BACILLUS) ; STAPHYLOCOCCUS ENTEROTOXIN B ( STAPH TOXIN). CATEGORY C BIOLOGICAL DISEASE- Third higest priority agents include emerging pathogens that could be engineered for mass dissemination in the *editat*ure because of : a) availability ; b) ease of production and dissemination ; c) potential for high morbidity and mortality and major health impact.
